The patriotic tree-lover traded in his usual diet of nuts and seeds for something a little sweeter in celebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

Jubilee snapper Mike Walker caught the squirrel red-handed as it casually dipped its nose into the cream-topped dessert dish, complete with a decorative Union Jack flag, at a garden party in Portchester, Hampshire.

Despite the heavy downpour over the bumper bank holiday weekend, an estimated 10,000 street parties were attended in honour of Her Majesty.

And the greedy squirrel must have had an inkling there would be some leftovers after seizing the opportunity to bag some goodies by sneaking onto a Union Jack-themed garden table.

The red and white trifle wasn’t enough to fill the hungry squirrel’s appetite however and it soon moved on to chomping on a discarded sponge cage.

It seems even Britain’s wildlife enjoyed themselves, along with the rest of the population, in the overwhelming tide of pageantry and patriotism in celebration of the Queen’s reign.
